The film documents three sold-out shows held at Foro Sol stadium in September 2023, attended by nearly 200,000 fans. The concerts were part of Depeche Mode's tour in support of Memento Mori, their fifteenth studio album and the first following the death of founding member Andy Fletcher in 2022. The performances were selected for the film in part due to Mexico's cultural relationship with death, which mirrors the themes of the album. According to the filmmakers, Depeche Mode: M serves as "a window into the band's timeless global influence, and a powerful tribute to the unbreakable connection between music, tradition, and the human spirit". Anonymous Editor’s Notes: - Footage of the band’s backstage ritual, along with scenes of fans arriving at the venue, as seen in the documentary "M", has been added during "Speak To Me (Instrumental)", replacing the original CCTV material. - The end credits track "Ghosts Again (Live in Mexico City)" has been replaced with "Survive (from the Memento Mori Sessions)". - Two bonus tracks have been added: "My Favourite Stranger" and "Condemnation", both featured in the documentary "M". - The final portion of the studio version audio of "My Favourite Stranger" has been restored and appended to the live recording. - The ambient footsteps and rain sound effects have been removed from "Condemnation". The concert film originally presented as "Memento Mori: Mexico City" has been retitled "M: Live in Mexico City". This change reflects a deliberate move toward a more distilled and iconic identity. The single letter “M” carries symbolic weight, encapsulating the era, the themes of Memento Mori, and the stark visual language surrounding the project. As a standalone title, “M” communicates with greater impact and memorability than the longer original name. The choice of a single-character title echoes one of the band’s most legendary releases, "101", a name originally suggested by Alan Wilder. Much like "101", the title “M” functions not merely as an abbreviation, but as a defining emblem of a particular moment in the band’s history. The subtitle “Live in Mexico City” has been added strictly for differentiation, distinguishing the concert presentation from the documentary "M" while maintaining cohesion within the overall project identity. Unreleased Tracks: - A Question of Lust - Strangelove (Acoustic; sung by Martin Gore) Regarding the omission of two songs that were professionally recorded but ultimately excluded from the final release, director Fernando Frías provided the following explanation: “The answer is that we were asked to leave them out. They were originally going to be included in the full assembly. It came down to choosing between "A Question of Lust" or "Home" and "Soul with Me" or "Strangelove". When two songs are similar in tone or contemporary relevance, a decision has to be made based on the overall running time." This statement confirms that both performances were filmed and edited as part of the complete concert assembly but were removed during the final decision-making process, primarily due to pacing and duration considerations rather than technical limitations. However, the footage remains in the band’s archive, and they will ultimately decide what to do with it. Filmed on location at Foro Sol in Mexico City.
