But it's really so simple. First I learned a BUNCH of standards, being able to play them all in the 4 stock styles (mentioned in the video) using just basic, functional level vocabulary. Gradually over time, I started upgrading to more authentic jazz vocabulary in the standards - also applying reharm, soloing, etc. It's like improving at chess - you must play a bunch of games at a beginner level.. and then gradually you start to learn better moves as you start recognizing and memorizing patterns. Just like in jazz, you must play a bunch of standards at a beginner level.. then gradually upgrade them as you start recognizing and memorizing patterns. **END EDIT** I started learning jazz in 2020. By 2022 I was playing jazz gigs. And now, I've been so blessed to be coaching students all around the world on how to do the same.
