우리나라 3대 사찰 중 하나로 손꼽히는 절 통도사(通度寺). 이곳에는 겨울에 매화가 아름답게 핍니다. 난초, 국화, 대나무와 함께 사군자에 포함되는 매화는 선비의 절개를 상징합니다. 이른 봄의 추위를 무릅쓰고 제일 먼저 꽃을 피우기 때문이죠. 조선시대 선비들이 매화를 좋아했듯이 통도사의 스님도 매화를 참 좋아한다고 합니다. 꽃잎은 차로 마시고, 열매(매실)은 장아찌로 담가 먹고, 향기로운 꽃냄새는 수행에 지친 불자(佛子)들의 마음을 잠시나마 설레게 합니다. 푸른 하늘과 구름, 붉은 매화와 하얀 매화가 음악과 함께합니다.
